Relinquishment Counseling and Consultaiton Services

Choice counselors provide emotional and psychological support to individuals contemplating or undergoing the process of relinquishing a child(ren) for adoption. This support helps parents understand the implications of their decision, explores their feelings, and assists them in making informed choices. Counseling may also be offered to the child being relinquished, particularly if they are over 12 years old.  Choice partners with adoption agencies outside of Oregon and Washington to provide this service when a birth parent lives in the Pacific Northwest but is placing a child with a family outside of these states.

Understanding Relinquishment

Purpose of Relinquishment Counseling:

The primary goal is to ensure that the relinquishing parent makes a voluntary and informed decision. Counselors help parents understand the legal and emotional aspects of relinquishment, including the permanence of the decision and the potential impact on the child.

 

Who Receives Counseling:

Relinquishment counseling is typically provided to the birth parents, and may also be offered to the child if they are old enough to understand the process.
