Birth Parent Advocacy and Support at Choice Adoptions: Meet an Advocate

Facing an unexpected pregnancy can feel overwhelming, isolating, and uncertain. At Choice Adoptions, our Birth Parent Advocacy Program was created to make sure no birth parent faces those moments alone. From the very first call, birth parents are connected with our dedicated Birth Parent Advocate, someone who understands the challenges, emotions, and questions that come with considering adoption.

If you are experiencing an unexpected pregnancy and considering adoption or just want to explore your options, reach out to one of our advocates at 503-550-9310.

For many, that first call is the hardest step. Our advocates answers every outreach with compassion and a calm, reassuring presence.

Hearing from One of Our Advocates

One of our birth parent advocates, Paula, shared that many of the parents who reach out are scared or unsure, often while navigating complex circumstances like housing insecurity, substance use, lack of support, or unstable relationships. What they find here is someone who listens without judgment.

“I believe that making an adoption plan can be a positive experience made out of love with thoughtful decisions,” Paula says.

Personalized Support for Every Birth Parent

Paula walks each birth parent through their options at their own pace. Her support may include:

• Exploring parenting and adoption choices

• Connecting them with medical care and prenatal resources

• Securing temporary or long term housing

• Beginning the matching process with waiting adoptive families

• Helping create a personalized birth plan

• Crafting an openness agreement that reflects their comfort and hopes for the future

Every plan is created to ensure birth parents feel informed, respected, and empowered throughout their adoption journey.

Why This Work Matters

For Paula, advocacy is more than a job. It is deeply personal.“I gave up a child for adoption as a teen and at that time open adoption was not an option,” she shares.

Her lived experience, combined with her background in social work, allows her to connect with the people she serves in a meaningful and authentic way. She understands the courage it takes to ask for help and the importance of being met with empathy rather than pressure.

Support That Continues After Placement

Birth parent care does not end when an adoption placement is made. At Choice, we are committed to walking alongside birth parents as they navigate life after birth.

“We want to support our birth parents success after the baby is born.”

Ongoing support may include:

• Counseling or mental health services

• Connection to resources

• Housing assistance

• Access to food

• Continued emotional and community support

Our goal is simple and vital:“To help these women move forward as self supporting, positive members of our community.”
